Dr. Herzog received his PhD from the University of Dortmund in Computer Science in 1976. He worked from 1977 to 1993 for IBM Germany in software product development where he also founded and directed the first Artificial Intelligence Research Lab in Europe in 1985.
From 1993-2009, he held the position of the chaired professor of Artificial Intelligence at the University of
Bremen, Germany where he founded and directed the Informatics Technology Center with more than 160 full time researchers from 1995 to 2009. During his tenure, he developed AI systems supporting Industrie 4.0 concepts and Logistics 4.0. Since 1998, he is also affiliated with the Machine Learning and Inference Lab of George Mason University, Fairfax, VA, USA, and from 2000-2002 he served as the CTO of Lenze AG, one of the world-wide known automation systems enterprises.
From 2010 until 2019, he held the position of the Wisdom Professor of Visual Information Technologies at Jacobs University Bremen.
Since 2015, he holds the position of a Professor of Artificial Intelligence for Urban and Rural Planning at Tongji University, Shanghai, where he develops AI methods such as Deep Learning, Machine Learning, Big Data Analytics, and Decision Support Systems for Urban and Rural Planning, including also Industrie 4.0 concepts.
He is a Fellow of acatech – German National Academy of Science and Engineering since 2006, a Fellow of the German Informatics Association since 2008, and a Foreign Member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering since 2021. He received the Honorary Professorship of Tongji University in 2021 as well as the Magnolia Silver Award from the City of Shanghai.
He has (co-)authored, (co)-edited and contributed to more than 300 refereed international publications
including four patents and 45 books and book contributions.
