Abstract:
Currently, more and more applications, e.g.,e-commerce and social networking, run in cloud data centers. Minimizing theconsumption of electric power and thus energy cost while maintaining theirperformance is increasingly important. Large Energy-efficient Cloud DataCenters (ECDCs) prefer renewable energy sources such as wind and solar energy. Thisseminar focuses on two highly challenging problems. First, we focus on how tominimize the grid energy cost of an ECDC while meeting the performance of eachdelay bounded request in an environment where grid price, wind speed and solarirradiance show temporal diversity. We propose a Temporal Request Schedulingalgorithm that considers the temporal diversity and the long tail in real-liferequests’ delay. Second, we focus on how to minimize the total cost of an ECDCsprovider in a market where the bandwidth and energy costs show geographicaldiversity. To solve the problem, we present a cost-aware workload schedulingmethod that jointly optimizes the number of active servers in each ECDC, andthe selection of Internet service providers for the ECDCs provider. Theproposed methods outperform their peers in the energy cost and throughput of anECDCs provider.
