内容摘要:Modeling is the key for solving a problem andgeneratingunderstandings in business. The newsvendor model has become thebuilding blockof many studies in operations and supply chain management. Inthis series oflectures, we take the newsvendor model as an example to discussthe art and thescience of modeling. More often than not, when operationsmanagement researchersattempt to study a new phenomenon, we set up models byapplying the newsvendorlogic—this model often serves as the experimental ratfor operations managementresearchers. We will start with basic properties derived from newsvendor modelusingstochastic orders and stochastic functions, and present severalimportantapplications. In particular, we will discuss several application areasofproblems in recent studies discuss why a certain way of applyingnewsvendormodel is inappropriate and how one should think of the applicationcontext whenformulating a problem applying the newsvendor model.
