Distributed cloud computing and Peer-to-Peer (P2P) systems have emerged as an active research field that
combines techniques which cover networks, distributed computing, distributed database,
and the various distributed applications.Distributed cloud computing and P2P systems scale to voluminous
information on very large numbers of
participating nodes in distributed systems. Data mining on large distributed databases is a very
important research area. Traditional data mining approach on a single machine or client-server network model does not satisfy the requirements from the large distributed databases and
applications in cloud computing systems. Two important challenges are raised, one is how to
implement data mining for large distributed databases in cloud computing systems, and the other is
how to develop parallel data mining algorithms and software tools for the distributed cloud computing
systems to improve the efficiency.In this talk, a design and implementation of a parallel data mining
algorithm in a P2P cloud computing system is presented and discussed in detail, which satisfies the
distribution of the cloud computing system well and makes parallel cloud computing become true.
The performance and comparison of the parallel algorithm with the sequential algorithm is analyzed
and evaluated, which presents the parallel algorithm features consistent implementation, higher
performance, and fine scalable ability.

Dr. Haifeng Gao is an Assistant Professor at Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry, University of
Notre Dame. He obtained his B.S. and M.S. at Fudan University (China) in 2000 and 2003 in Professor
Shoukuan Fu’s group. In 2004, he joined Professor Krzysztof Matyjaszewski's research group at
Carnegie Mellon University and obtained his doctorate in December 2008. In January 2009, he joined
the research group of Professor Jean M. J. Frechet at the University of California, Berkeley as a
postdoctoral researcher, working on polymeric materials with applications including catalysis and
energy conversion. Dr. Gao's research focuses on the design and synthesis of functional polymers
with controlled nanostructures by determining of their fundamental structure-property relationships. These materials will meet critical needs in the fields of environmental
remediation, energy conversion and biofunctional materials.Dr. Gao has co-authored 45 peer-reviewed
papers, 3 book chapters and is the recipient of 1 US patent. His publications so far have been cited
for more than 2300 times and his current H-index is 25. Dr. Gao has co-authored 50 peer-reviewed
papers, 4 book chapters and is the recipient of 1 US patent. His publications so far have been cited
for more than 3000 times and his current H-index is 29.
讲座摘要:
This presentation discussed our recent progress on developing new strategies to synthesizefunctional polymers
and their applications in gene delivery and CO2 capture. Functional polymers with uniform size,
hierarchical structure and tunable compositions can find broad applications in different areas.1 We
applied controlled radical polymerizations in nanometer-sized confined space, such as micelles
in a microemulsion, and successfully regulated the polymerization behavior of different functional
monomers. The developed facile synthetic techniques include: 1) one-step synthesis of hyperbranched
polymers with uniform structure and high molecular weights,2 2) one-pot synthesis of crosslinked
polypyrrole nanoparticles.3-5_ENREF_3 The former hyperbranched polymers with thousands of preserved
initiating sites were used as multifunctional initiators for surface polymerization. The produced
hairy nanoparticles with core-shell structures and dimension of 100 nm showed promising properties
ascarriers for siRNA delivery. The polypyrrole nanoparticles with high nitrogen content could further
assemble into porous organic materials with different pore distributions, which is a promising
material for CO2 uptake.

Dr. Xiaoqing Zhang is a Principal Research Scientist and a research group leader for polymer
engineering group at CSIRO Materials Science and Engineering, Australia. He obtained his PhD in
polymer science (1991) from Hokkaido University, Japan. After several years employment with R&D
Centre of Nippon Zeon Ltd, Japan, Department of Physics at University of Dublin, Ireland, School of
Chemistry and then Department of Chemical Engineering at University of Melbourne, Australia,
he joined CSIRO in 1998.
